Feet case study Essay
The thing that appeared to truly call my consideration just like an issue is a portion of the productivity proportions. Beginning with the Gross Profit edge, it appears right now that Just Feet makes $41.62 in 1999 and in 1998 $41.53 in benefit, yet it cost the organization more to create than what they are making in benefit. This shows they have to bring down their expenses in making their item to be progressively beneficial. The organization has not arrived at a breakeven point. We additionally observe that in the two years of 1998 to 1999 that there was a reduction in gainfulness a decline consequently of value. This implies the organization is making less benefit for every dollar that the investors have put resources into the organization. This proportion gives us how effectively the organization is functioning, and it shows how proficiently the board is utilizing the assets that investors have added to the organization. So in doing these analysisâ for Just for Feet Inc. I would be scrutinizing the proficiency of the board for taking care of the salary that investors have contributed. I would likewise need to look for carefully at how the organization is creating, the cost they are having is higher than the benefit, therefore we would need to assess how they could bring down expense to make the benefit increasingly gainful for the organization. Question 2. Only for Feet worked enormous, high-volume retail locations. Distinguish inward control dangers regular to such a business. By what means should these dangers influence the review arranging choices for such a customer? One of the dangers that an enormous retail location like Just for Feet Inc. could discover in inner controls is in the zone of Inventory Control. The biggest concern is that what is expressed on the Financial articulations truly exist. It is essential to assess this hazard with the goal that an organization can check whether there is any burglary by workers and to ensure that on its monetary record it shows a precise report of stock. Another zone of hazard in a high volume retail location would be the issue of taking care of money. Since there is such a high turnover of money in an enormous retail location, there should be acceptable interior controls set up that will forestall bogus records receivable, and a distortion of incomes. Another hazard that should be assessed is the administration tasks and how they handle and partition obligations inside the area. In retail locations there can be a high turnover of individuals, consequently the board needs to ensure that there are consistently the best possible division of obligations, they have to ensure all administrative work is appropriately recorded and represented. With regards to how it will influence the review plan, the reviewer needs to ensure that there is legitimate division of obligations, needs to test to ensure esteems are right and there are no misquotes. The need to take a gander at the stock, representing the correct an incentive close by just as the best possible things in stock. Question 3 Only for feet worked in a very serious industry, or sub-industry. Distinguish inborn hazard factors regular to organizations confronting such serious conditions. In what capacity should these dangers influence the review arranging choices for such a customer? An intrinsic hazard is the point at which an organization is defenseless to an error in budget reports. It is the obligation of an auditorâ to do reviews that will make these dangers low to nonexistent. A case of this is isolation of obligation. IN a profoundly serious business benefit and bigger income will distinguish you just like the best, a potential hazard is the absence of work force that minimizes costs giving individuals twofold obligations, yet making a characteristic hazard. On the off chance that we don't have the board approving buy requests, and others represent the item being gotten and another representing it being sold and another affirming the fulfillment of the procedure in the bookkeeping of such things thro ugh month to month closings or such. A reviewer would need to assess that administration has the experience important to do these plans. What's more, those that are in the referenced positions additionally would be experienced. On the off chance that there is a high turnover in these positions it could be an indication of deceitful conduct since individuals who are trust commendable would not remain in a spot to accomplish something exploitative. All these kind of changes ought to be assessed by the evaluator. Question 4 Set up an extensive rundown, in a projectile arrangement of the review chance variables present for the 1998 Just for Feet review. Recognize the five review chance factors that you accept were generally basic to the effective fruition of that review. Rank these hazard factors from least to generally significant and be set up to safeguard your rankings. Quickly clarify whether you accept that the Deloitte reviewers reacted properly to the five basic review hazard factors that you distinguished. The accentuation that administration made on arriving at the profit objectives at whatever cost. The close to year end exchanges that Just for Feet was occupied with The law money assets of the organization The kind of business technique that the administration of Just for Feet utilized The way that the organization consistently kept the stock costs on the very good quality The expansion in stock toward the finish of the two years. The merchant affirmations not coming through to affirm exchange by Just for Feet. The hazard factors that were generally critical to the reviews culmination would be the Inherent Risk, control chance, review hazard and recognition chance. An Auditâ risk is the point at which an examiner addresses the accompanying inquiries: Is there a danger of extortion? Is this hazard identified with the intricacy of exchanges? Does it incorporate and critical exchange out of the typical course of business? Karl M Johnston, (Auditing 2014) states that ââ¬Å"whether the hazard is identified with ongoing huge monetary bookkeeping, or different turns of events and, it requires explicit attention.â⬠In my positioning of increasingly imperative to least significant in chance variables I feel that they are commonly all similarly significant. Characteristic hazard are significant on the grounds that it will assess if there has been some kind of burglary, or if there was anything changed as a non-routine exchanges or an unpredictable exchange. Similar to what Just for Feet did when raised the stock toward the finish of two years. The Control hazard is likewise of equivalent significance since it is identifies with a misquote being halted with inner controls set up. The way that Just for Feet was permitting errors to be composed by outside merchants to send to the reviewer shows that the absence of inward controls inside the Just for Feet element permitted this kind of poor fake administration to happen. This would be evaluated through statement level checks like: Valuation, presence, introduction, culmination and rights and commitments exposures. As I would like to think Deloitte didn't react properly to these hazard factors. In spite of the fact that they may have seen the hazard factors, however they saw the misquotes and addressed them, they didn't act in like manner. In the event that they had the SEC would not have fined them. Question 5 Put yourself in the situation of Thomas Shine for this situation. How might you have reacted when Don-Allen Ruttenberg requested that you send a bogus affirmation to Deloitte and Touche? Before reacting, recognize the gatherings who will be influenced by your choice? The individuals who might have been influenced by my choice is the investors, other people who worked for the organization, the general population, the board and administrators of the organization, even the individuals who were clients of Just for Feet. In any case, and still, at the end of the day with each one of those individuals in danger I would have said no and gambled losing my employment by being terminated. My moral situation to cling to what is correct is the thing that would expect me to settle on this choice. To be approached to accomplish something false would make me need to isolate myself from this kind of the executives. At theâ end I would take care of my awful decision. The Power Of Mothers Love
The Power Of Mothers Love This story is a little long but well worth the time to read. It perfectly illustrates not only the amazing power of Love, but also the truly inspiring power of Touch. When doctors told Carolyn Isbister that her tiny premature daughter would die within 20 minutes, she had to prepare herself for the worst.Tiny Rachael had just been born minutes before, weighing just 1.4lb (0.64kg), and her heart was only beating once every ten seconds. But Miss Isbister was determined to have just one cuddle with her daughter and to savor the one precious moment she had, so she picked up tiny Rachael and cuddled her close. And it was a cuddle that has amazed doctors by saving the babyâs life. The warmth of her motherâs skin actually kickstarted Rachaelâs heart into beating properly, which allowed her to take tiny breaths of her own.Four months later the baby who was so tiny that the doctors gave up on her life has been allowed home, thanks to that precious life saving cuddle from her mother.Mis s Isbister, 36, from West Lothian, said: Rachael has been such a little fighter it is a miracle that she is here at all. When she was born the doctors told us that she would die within 20 minutes because her heart wasnât beating properly and she wasnât breathing. But that one precious cuddle saved her life. Iâll never forget it.Miss Isbister, a chemist, and her partner David Elliott, 35, an electronic engineer, were thrilled when she fell pregnant. At the 20 week scan at the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, doctors told them that she was carrying a girl and they decided to name her Rachael. But at 24 weeks, Miss Isbister went into premature labour after she developed an infection in her womb.Miss Isbister, who also has two children Samuel, 10, and Kirsten, 8, from a previous marriage, said: We were just terrified we were going to lose her. I had been bleeding throughout the pregnancy, and had suffered three miscarriages before falling pregnant with Rachael, so we really didnât th ink there was much hope. When Rachael was born, weighing 1.4lb, doctors told the couple that their daughter would only live for 20 minutes. She wasnât breathing and she was grey and lifeless. Her heart was only beating once every 10 seconds.Miss Isbister said: The doctor just took one look at her and said no. They didnât even try to help her with her breathing as they said it would just prolong her dying. Everyone just gave up on her.The doctors told the couple to say their goodbyes to their daughter, but Miss Isbister decided that she would give her daughter the only cuddle she would ever have. So she lifted her out of her hospital blanket and placed her on her chest, with skin to skin contact. She said: I didnât want her die being cold. So I lifted her out of her blanket and put against my skin to warm her up. Her feet were so cold. It was the only cuddle I was going to have with her, so I wanted to remember the moment. But after 20 minutes tiny Rachael was still alive. Then a miracle happened. She started taking tiny breaths on her own, and her heart started beating more regularly.Miss Isbister said: We couldnât believe it and neither could the doctors. She let out a tiny cry. When she was still breathing after four hours and her heart was beating more regularly, the doctors came in and said there was still no hope for her, but I still wasnât letting go of her. We had her blessed by the hospital chaplain, and waited for her to slip away. But she still hung on. And then amazingly the pink color began to return to her cheeks. She literally was turning from grey to pink before our eyes, and she began to warm up too. After 48 hours, the doctors decided to put her on a ventilator to help with her breathing and she was transferred to the intensive care unit.Miss Isbister said: The doctors said that she had proved she was a fighter and that she now deserved some intensive care as there was some hope. She had done it all on her own without any medical inter vention or drugs. She had clung onto life and it was all because of that cuddle. It had warmed up her body enough for her to start fighting.Because Rachel hadnât had any oxygen for four hours, doctors warned the couple that there was a high risk she had been brain damaged. But a scan showed no evidence of any damage at all.As the days passed, Rachael slowly began to gain in strength and put on weight. She had laser treatment on her eyes to save her sight as the blood vessels hadnât had chance to develop properly in the womb. And she also had six blood transfusions.Miss Isbister added: We couldnât believe that she was doing so well. Her heart rate and breathing would suddenly sometimes drop without warning, but she just got stronger and stronger. After five weeks she was taken off the ventilator and Miss Isbister was able to hold and breastfeed her. Then after four months in hospital, they were finally allowed to take her home a day which they never thought they would see.At s ix months old, she now weighs 8lb (3.63kg) the same as a newborn baby and she has a healthy appetite.Miss Isbister said: She is doing so well. When we finally brought her home, the doctors told us that she was a remarkable little girl. And most of all, she just loves her cuddles. She will sleep for hours, just curled into my chest. It was that first cuddle which saved her life and Iâm just so glad I trusted my instinct and picked her up when I did. Otherwise she wouldnât be here today.Photos: By WORLDWIDEFEATURES

Jonathan Livingston Seagull, By Richard Bach And The...
The story of ââ¬Å"Jonathan Livingston Seagullâ⬠by Richard Bach and ââ¬Å"The Mystic of the Caveâ⬠from The Republic by Plato are two stories that are an allegory about morals. An allegory is a story, poem, or picture that can be interpreted to reveal a hidden meaning about a moral, politics or religious meaning. Jonathan Seagull tries to get the other seagulls to concentrate more on flying and the prisoner tries to get the other prisoners to be open minded and get them out of the den. Will these two be successful at what they are trying to do? These two stories show morals that are vital because the characters both decide to go out on their own, they never give up on themselves, and they show love and forgiveness. First, these two stories show morals that are important because the characters does the opposite of what everyone in their group does. In the book, ââ¬Å"Jonathan Livingston Seagullâ⬠, Jonathan feels like it is more important to learn the techniques to fly better rather than pick out left over food. He also learns if he flies better, then he has a greater chance at finding better food. ââ¬Å"What he had once hoped for the flock, he now gained for himself alone.â⬠(Bach pg. 26) Jonathan compares to the prisoner in ââ¬Å"The Myth of the Caveâ⬠because the prisoners are forced to look forward at the shadows on the wall. The prisoner turns and looks at the fire light to see for himself if the images are real. ââ¬Å"He is reluctantly dragged up a steep and rugged ascent, and held fast until he is

World War II Memorial in Washington D.C.
After years of discussion and over half a century of waiting, the United States has finally honored the Americans who helped fight World War II with a memorial. The World War II Memorial, which opened to the public on April 29, 2004, is located at what was once the Rainbow Pool, centered between the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument. The Idea The idea of a WWII Memorial in Washington DC was first brought to Congress in 1987 by ââ¬â¹Representative Marcy Kaptur (D-Ohio) at the suggestion of World War II veteran Roger Dubin. After several years of discussion and additional legislation, President Bill Clinton signed Public Law 103-32 on May 25, 1993, authorizing the American Battle Monuments Commission (ABMC) to establish a WWII Memorial. In 1995, seven sites were discussed for the Memorial. Though the Constitution Gardens site was initially selected, it was later decided that it was not a prominent enough location for a memorial commemorating such an important event in history. After more research and discussion, the Rainbow Pool site was agreed upon. The Design In 1996, a two-stage design competition was opened. Out of 400 preliminary designs entered, six were chosen to compete in the second stage which required review by a design jury. After careful review, the design by architect Friedrich St. Florian was chosen. St. Florians design consisted of the Rainbow Pool (lowered and reduced in size by 15 percent) in a sunken plaza, surrounded in a circular pattern with 56 pillars (each 17-feet-high) which represent the unity of the U.S. states and territories during the war. Visitors would enter the sunken plaza on ramps which will pass by two giant arches (each 41-feet tall) that represent the two fronts of the war. Inside, there would be a Freedom Wall covered with 4,000 gold stars, each representing 100 Americans that died during World War II. A sculpture by Ray Kasky would be placed in the middle of the Rainbow Pool and two fountains would send water more than 30-feet into the air. The Funds Needed The 7.4 acre WWII Memorial was estimated to cost a total of $175 million to build, which includes future estimated maintenance fees. World War II veteran and Senator Bob Dole and Fed-Ex founder Frederick W. Smith were the national co-chairmen of the fund-raising campaign. Amazingly, approximately $195 million was collected, almost all from private contributions. Controversy Unfortunately, there has been some criticism over the Memorial. Though the critics were in favor of a WWII Memorial, they strongly opposed its location. The critics formed the National Coalition to Save Our Mall in order to stop the construction of the Memorial at the Rainbow Pool. They argued that placing the Memorial at that location destroys the historic view between the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument. Construction On November 11, 2000, Veterans Day, there was a ground-breaking ceremony held on the National Mall. Senator Bob Dole, actor Tom Hanks, President Bill Clinton, a 101-year-old mother of a fallen soldier, and 7,000 others attended the ceremony. War-era songs were played by the U.S. Army Band, clips of war-time footage were shown on large screens, and a computerized 3-D walkthrough of the Memorial was available. Actual construction of the Memorial began in September 2001. Constructed of mostly bronze and granite, the construction took three years to complete. On Thursday, April 29, 2004, the site first opened to the public. The formal dedication of the Memorial was held on May 29, 2004. The World War II Memorial honors the 16 million men and women who served in the U.S. armed services, the 400,000 who died in the war, and the millions of Americans who supported the war on the home front.

The Secret Circle The Captive Chapter Three Free Essays
string(30) " walked downstairs with them\." ââ¬Å"I think,â⬠Melanie said quietly, ââ¬Å"that itââ¬â¢s time to talk about the skull. Adamââ¬â¢s never told us exactly how he found it-ââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"No, youââ¬â¢ve been very secretive about that,â⬠Faye put in. ââ¬Å"-but maybe now is the time. We will write a custom essay sample on The Secret Circle: The Captive Chapter Three or any similar topic only for you Order Now â⬠Diana and Adam looked at each other, and then Diana nodded slightly. ââ¬Å"All right, then, tell it. Try not to leave anything out.â⬠After the walk back from the cemetery they had crowded, all twelve of them, into Dianaââ¬â¢s room. Cassie looked around at the group and realized that it was divided. Suzan, Deborah, and the Henderson brothers were sitting on one side, near Faye, while Laurel, Melanie, Adam, and Sean were on the other side, near Diana. At least, Cassie thought, watching Seanââ¬â¢s uneasily shifting eyes, Sean was sitting on Dianaââ¬â¢s side for the moment. He could change any time. And so could Nick-Nick could vote with Diana one day, and then for no apparent reason vote with Faye the next. Nick was always an unknown factor. And so, a voice inside her whispered, are you. But that was ridiculous. Nothing-not even Faye-could make Cassie vote against Diana. Not when it really counted. Adam was talking in a low, thoughtful voice, as if he were trying to remember precisely. ââ¬Å"It wasnââ¬â¢t off Cape Cod, it was farther north, closer to Boston. Everybody knows there are seventeen islands off Boston Bay; theyââ¬â¢re all deserted and covered with weeds. Well, I found an eighteenth. It wasnââ¬â¢t like the others; it was flat and sandy and there was no sign that people had ever been there. And there was something strange about it. â⬠¦ Iââ¬â¢d been to the place before, but Iââ¬â¢d never seen it. It was as if my eyes had suddenly been opened after-â⬠He stopped. Cassie, looking at the lampââ¬â¢s reflection on Dianaââ¬â¢s gleaming pine-board floor, felt as if she were smothering. She didnââ¬â¢t dare breathe until Adam went on, ââ¬Å"-after working on the fishing boats all summer. But when I tried to head for the island, the tiller bucked, trying to keep me away or run me aground on the rocks. I had to wrestle with it to bring the boat in-and I had to call on Earth and Water or Iââ¬â¢d never have made it. When I was finally safe I looked at the rocks and saw the wreckage of other boats. Anybody that had made it there before didnââ¬â¢t make it away again alive.â⬠He took a deep, slow breath. ââ¬Å"As soon as I stepped on the sand I could feel that the whole island was electric. I knew it was the place even before I saw the circle of stones in the middle. It was just the way Black John described it. Sea heather had grown up around the rocks, but the center was clear and thatââ¬â¢s where I dug. About a minute later my shovel hit something hard.â⬠ââ¬Å"And then?â⬠said Diana. ââ¬Å"And then I pulled it out. I felt-I donââ¬â¢t know, dizzy, when I saw it. The sun was glittering on the sand and it sort of blinded me. Then I wrapped the skull up in my shirt and left. The island didnââ¬â¢t fight when I went; it was like a trap that had been sprung. That was- letââ¬â¢s see, September twenty-first. As soon as I got back to the Bay, I wanted to start up to New Salem, but I had some things to take care of. I couldnââ¬â¢t get started until the next day, and I knew I was going to be late for Koriââ¬â¢s initiation.â⬠He paused and threw an apologetic glance toward Doug and Chris. They said nothing, but Cassie felt eyes flicker toward her. Koriââ¬â¢s initiation had become Cassieââ¬â¢s initiation, because on that morning Kori had been found dead at the bottom of the high-school steps. ââ¬Å"Just what is the point of all this storytelling?â⬠Faye asked, her husky voice bored. ââ¬Å"Unlessâ⬠-she straightened up, looking more interested-ââ¬Å"you think the rest of the Master Tools may be on that island.â⬠ââ¬Å"I told you before,â⬠Adam said. ââ¬Å"There was nothing else there, Faye. Just the skull.â⬠ââ¬Å"And the point is that we need to know more about the skull,â⬠Diana put in. ââ¬Å"For better or worse, weââ¬â¢re stuck with it now. I donââ¬â¢t think we should put it back on the island-ââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"Put it back!â⬠Faye exclaimed. ââ¬Å"-where anybody might find it, now that the protective spell is broken. Itââ¬â¢s not safe there. I donââ¬â¢t know if it will be safe anywhere.â⬠ââ¬Å"Well, now,â⬠Faye murmured, looking sleepy. ââ¬Å"If itââ¬â¢s too much trouble for you, Iââ¬â¢ll be glad to take care of it.â⬠Diana just shot her a look that said Faye was the last person sheââ¬â¢d ask to take care of the skull. But, Cassie noticed with a sinking feeling, Fayeââ¬â¢s heavy-lidded amber eyes were not fixed on Dianaââ¬â¢s face. They were trained on the little gold key at Dianaââ¬â¢s throat. There was a knock at the door. Cassie started, hard enough that Laurel turned around and looked at her in surprise. But it was only Dianaââ¬â¢s father, whoââ¬â¢d come home with a bulging briefcase in his hand. Mr. Meade looked around the crowded room in mild surprise, as if he didnââ¬â¢t quite know who all these people were. Cassie wondered suddenly how much he knew about the Circle. ââ¬Å"Is everyone staying for dinner?â⬠he asked Diana. ââ¬Å"Oh-no,â⬠Diana said, looking at a dainty white and gold clock on the nightstand. ââ¬Å"I didnââ¬â¢t realize it was after seven, Dad. Iââ¬â¢ll fix something quick.â⬠He nodded, and after one more quick, uncertain glance around the room, left. Bedsprings creaked and clothing rustled as everyone else got up. ââ¬Å"Tomorrow we can meet at school,â⬠Melanie said. ââ¬Å"But Iââ¬â¢ve got to study tonight; this whole last week has been shot and Iââ¬â¢ve got a biology test.â⬠ââ¬Å"Me too,â⬠said Laurel. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ve got algebra homework,â⬠Suzan offered, and Deborah muttered, ââ¬Å"Meaning youââ¬â¢ve got a weekââ¬â¢s worth of soap tapes in the VCR.â⬠ââ¬Å"All right, weââ¬â¢ll meet tomorrow,â⬠Diana said. She walked downstairs with them. You read "The Secret Circle: The Captive Chapter Three" in category "Essay examples" Faye managed to catch Cassieââ¬â¢s arm as the others were leaving, and she breathed in her ear, ââ¬Å"Get it tonight. Call me and Iââ¬â¢ll come and pick it up; then weââ¬â¢ll put it back before morning so she wonââ¬â¢t notice itââ¬â¢s gone.â⬠Cassie pulled her arm away rebelliously. But at the door, Faye gave her a meaningful look, and the flash in those amber eyes alarmed her. She stared at Faye a long moment, then nodded slightly. ââ¬Å"Do you want me to stay?â⬠Adam was saying to Diana. ââ¬Å"No,â⬠Cassie said quickly, before Diana could answer. They looked at her, startled, and she said, ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ll stay and help make dinner, if itââ¬â¢s all right, Diana. I told my grandma and my mom Iââ¬â¢d be gone and theyââ¬â¢ve probably already eaten by now.â⬠Dianaââ¬â¢s graciousness rose to the fore. ââ¬Å"Oh- of course you can stay, then,â⬠she said. ââ¬Å"Weââ¬â¢ll be fine, Adam.â⬠ââ¬Å"Okay.â⬠Adam gave Cassie a keen glance, which she returned woodenly. He went out, following Chris and Doug into the darkness. The flicker of a match up ahead showed where Nick was. Cassie looked up at the night sky, which glittered brashly with stars but not a trace of moon, and then stepped back as Diana shut the door. Dinner was quiet, with Mr. Meade sitting there, leafing through a newspaper, occasionally glancing up over his reading glasses at the two girls. Afterward they went back up to Dianaââ¬â¢s room. Cassie realized she needed to stall. ââ¬Å"You know, you never told me about that print,â⬠she said, pointing. Decorating Dianaââ¬â¢s walls were six art prints. Five of them were very similar, black and white with a slightly old-fashioned look. Diana had told her they were pictures of Greek goddesses: Aphrodite, the beautiful but fickle goddess of love; Artemis, the fierce virgin huntress; Hera, the imperious queen of the gods; Athena, the calm gray-eyed goddess of wisdom; and Persephone, who loved flowers and all growing things. But the last print was different. It was in color, and the style was more abstract, more modern. It showed a young woman standing beneath a starry sky, while a crescent moon shone silver down on her flowing hair. She was wearing a simple white garment, cut high to show a garter on her thigh. On her upper arm was a silver cuff-bracelet, and on her head was a thin circlet with a crescent moon, horns upward. It was the outfit Diana wore at meetings of the Circle. ââ¬Å"Who is she?â⬠Cassie said, staring at the beautiful girl in the print. ââ¬Å"Diana,â⬠Diana said wryly. Cassie turned to her, and she smiled. ââ¬Å"The goddess Diana,â⬠she added. ââ¬Å"Not the Roman Diana; another one. Sheââ¬â¢s older than all the Greek goddesses, and she was different from them. She was a Great Goddess; she ruled everything. She was goddess of the night and the moon and the stars-thereââ¬â¢s a story that once she turned all the stars into mice to impress the witches on earth. So they made her Queen of the Witches.â⬠Cassie grinned. ââ¬Å"I think it would take more than that to impress Faye.â⬠ââ¬Å"Probably. Some people say that her legend was based on an actual person, who taught magic and was a champion of poor women. Other people say she was first a Sun Goddess, but then she got chased out by male Sun Gods and turned to the night. The Romans got her confused with the Greek goddess Artemis-you know, the huntress-but she was much more than that. Anyway, sheââ¬â¢s always been Queen of the Witches.â⬠ââ¬Å"Like you,â⬠Cassie said. Diana laughed and shook her head. ââ¬Å"I may not always be leader,â⬠she said. ââ¬Å"It all depends on what happens between now and November tenth. Thatââ¬â¢s the day of the leadership vote.â⬠ââ¬Å"Why November tenth?â⬠ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s my birthday-Fayeââ¬â¢s too, coincidentally. You have to be seventeen to be permanent leader, and thatââ¬â¢s when we both will be.â⬠Cassie was surprised. Diana was still only sixteen, like her? She always seemed so mature, and she was a senior. But it was even stranger that Faye was so young, and that the cousins had the same birthday. She looked at Diana, sitting there on the bed. As beautiful as the girl in the last print was, Diana was more beautiful. With hair that indescribable color, like sunlight and moonlight woven together, and a face like a flower, and eyes like green jewels, Diana resembled something from a fairy tale or legend more than a real person. But the goodness and-well, purity that shone out of Dianaââ¬â¢s eyes were very real indeed, Cassie thought. Cassie was proud to be her friend. Then the light flashed on the gold key around Dianaââ¬â¢s neck and she remembered what she was there to do. I canââ¬â¢t, Cassie thought, as her stomach plummeted giddily. She could feel the slow, sick pounding of her heart. Right this minute around her own neck was hanging the crescent-moon necklace that Diana had given her at her initiation. How could she steal from Diana, deceive Diana? But sheââ¬â¢d been through all that before. There was no way out. Faye would do exactly what she had threatened-Cassie knew that. The only way to save Diana was to deceive her. Itââ¬â¢s for her own good, Cassie told herself. So just stop thinking about it. Do what you have to and get it over with. ââ¬Å"Cassie? You look upset.â⬠ââ¬Å"I-â⬠Cassie started to say, no, of course not, and change the subject the way she usually did when somebody caught her daydreaming. But then she had an idea. ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t really feel like going home alone,â⬠she said, grimacing. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s not just the walk-itââ¬â¢s that house. It creaks and rattles all night long and sometimes I canââ¬â¢t even get to sleep. Especially if Iââ¬â¢m thinking about. . . aboutâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ ââ¬Å"Is that all?â⬠Diana said, smiling. ââ¬Å"Well, thatââ¬â¢s easy to take care of. Sleep here.â⬠Cassie was stricken at how easily Diana made the offer. ââ¬Å"And if youââ¬â¢re worried about the skull,â⬠Diana went on, ââ¬Å"you can stop. Itââ¬â¢s not going anywhere, and itââ¬â¢s not going to do anything more to hurt people. I promise.â⬠Cassieââ¬â¢s face flamed and she had to struggle not to look at the cabinet. She would never have mentioned the skull herself: she couldnââ¬â¢t have gotten the word out. ââ¬Å"Okay,â⬠she said, trying to keep her voice normal. ââ¬Å"Thanks. Iââ¬â¢ll call my mom and tell her Iââ¬â¢m staying over.â⬠ââ¬Å"We can drive to your house so you can get dressed in the morning-Iââ¬â¢ll check on the guest room.â⬠As Diana left, the voices in Cassieââ¬â¢s mind were rioting. You little sneak, they shouted at her. You nasty, weaselly, lying little traitor- Shut up! Cassie shouted back at them, with such force that they actually did shut up. She called her mother. ââ¬Å"The guest roomââ¬â¢s ready,â⬠Diana said, reappearing as Cassie hung up the phone. ââ¬Å"But if you get scared in the night you can come in here.â⬠ââ¬Å"Thanks,â⬠Cassie said, genuinely grateful. ââ¬Å"What are big sisters for?â⬠They sat up and talked for a while, but neither of them had had much sleep the night before, and as the clockââ¬â¢s hands edged closer to ten they were both yawning. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ll take my bath tonight so you can have one in the morning,â⬠Diana said. ââ¬Å"The hot water doesnââ¬â¢t last long around here.â⬠ââ¬Å"Isnââ¬â¢t there a spell to take care of that?â⬠Diana laughed and tossed a book to her. ââ¬Å"Here, see if you can find one.â⬠It was the Book of Shadows Diana had brought to Cassieââ¬â¢s initiation, the one that had been in Dianaââ¬â¢s family since the first witches came to New Salem. The brittle yellow pages had a mildewy smell that made Cassie wrinkle her nose, but she was glad to have this chance to look at it. Toward the beginning of the book the writing was small and almost illegible, but further on it became stylized and beautiful, like copperplate. Different authors, Cassie thought, different generations. The Post-it notes and plastic flags on almost every page were the work of the current generation. It was full of spells, descriptions of coven meetings, rituals, and stories. Cassie pored over it, her eyes moving in fascination from one title to the next. Some of the spells seemed quaint and archaic; others were like something out of a modern pop-psychology book. Some were just timeless. A Charm to Cure a Sickly Child, she read. To Make Hens Lay. For Protection Against Fire and Water. To Overcome a Bad Habit. To Cast Out Fear and Malignant Emotions. To Find Treasure. To Change Your Luck. To Turn Aside Evil. A Talisman For Strength caught her eye. Take a smooth and shapely rock, and upon one face carve the rising sun and a crescent moon, horns up. Upon the reverse, the words: Strength of stone Be in my bone Power of light Sustain my fight. I could use that, Cassie thought. She continued flipping through the pages. A Spell Against Contagious Disease. To Hold Evil Harmless. To Cause Dreams. And then, as if her guilty conscience had summoned it up, another spell appeared before her eyes. For an Untrue Lover. Standing in the light of a full moon, take a strand of the loverââ¬â¢s hair and tie knots in it, saying: No peace find No friend keep No lover bind No harvest reap No repose take No hunger feed No thirst slake No sorrow speed No debt pay No fear flee Rue the day You wronged me. Cassieââ¬â¢s pulse was fluttering in her wrists. Would anyone really put a curse like that on someone they loved, no matter how unfaithful? She was still staring at the page when there was a movement at the door. She shut the book hastily as Diana came in, hair wrapped in a towel turban. But her eyes were drawn instantly to the gold chain Diana was dropping on the nightstand. It lay there next to a round stone with a spiral pattern in it, gray swirled with pale blue and sprinkled with quartz crystals. The chalcedony rose that Diana had given to Adam, and that Adam had given to Cassie. Now it was back where it belonged, Cassie thought, and something around her heart went numb. ââ¬Å"The bathroomââ¬â¢s all yours,â⬠said Diana. ââ¬Å"Hereââ¬â¢s a nightgown-or do you want a T-shirt?â⬠ââ¬Å"A nightgownââ¬â¢s fine,â⬠Cassie said. All the time she was washing up and changing she kept seeing the key. If only Diana would leave it thereâ⬠¦ It was still on the nightstand when she popped her head back in Dianaââ¬â¢s room. Diana was already in bed. ââ¬Å"Want me to shut the door?â⬠ââ¬Å"No,â⬠Diana said, reaching up to turn out the light. ââ¬Å"Just leave it open a bit. Good night.â⬠ââ¬Å"Good night, Diana.â⬠But once in the guest room next door Cassie propped herself up on two pillows and lay staring at the ceiling. Strangely, it was almost peaceful, lying there and knowing that for the moment there was nothing she could do but wait. She could hear the sound of the ocean behind Dianaââ¬â¢s house, now louder, now softer. She waited a long time, listening to the quiet sounds. She felt relaxed, until she thought about getting up-then her heart started to pound. At last she was sure Diana must be asleep. Now, she thought. If you donââ¬â¢t move now, you never will. Breath held, she shifted her weight in the bed and let her legs down. The hardwood floor creaked slightly as she crossed it, and she froze each time. Outside Dianaââ¬â¢s door, she stood straining her ears. She could hear nothing. She put her hand on the door and slowly, by infinitesimal degrees, she pushed it open. Carefully, lungs burning because she was afraid to breathe too loud, she placed one foot inside the threshold and let her weight down on it. Diana was a dim shape on the bed. Please donââ¬â¢t let her eyes be open, Cassie thought. She had the horrible fantasy that Diana was just lying there staring at her. But as she took another slow, careful step inside, and another, she could see that Dianaââ¬â¢s eyes were shut. Oh, God, Cassie thought. I have to breathe. She opened her mouth and exhaled and inhaled silently. Her heart was shaking her and she felt dizzy. Take tiny steps, she thought. She crept farther into the room until she was standing directly beside Diana. On the nightstand, just a few inches from Dianaââ¬â¢s sleeping face, was the key. Feeling as if she was moving in slow motion, Cassie put her hand out, placed it flat on the key. She didnââ¬â¢t want to make any noise, but as she slid the necklace toward her, the chain rattled. She closed her fingers over it and held it tightly. Now to get away. She forced herself to creep, all the time looking over her shoulder at the bed-was Diana waking up? She reached the cabinet, and the little brass keyhole. Fit the key in. She was fumbling; her fingers felt clumsy as sausages. For a moment she panicked, thinking, what if it isnââ¬â¢t the right key after all? But at last she got it in and turned it. The lock clicked. Hot relief swept over Cassie. Sheââ¬â¢d done it. Now she had to get the skull and call Faye- and what if Faye didnââ¬â¢t answer? What if Dianaââ¬â¢s father caught her phoning in the middle of the night, or if Diana woke up and found the skull missingâ⬠¦ ? But as she eased the cabinet door open the world blurred and went dark before her eyes. The hall light was shining into the cabinet. It was dim, but it was clear enough to show that all Cassieââ¬â¢s caution had been in vain, and all her fears about getting the skull to Faye were pointless. The cabinet was empty. Cassie never knew how long she stood there, unable to think or move. But at last she pushed the cabinet door shut with shaking hands and locked it. If itââ¬â¢s not here, then where is it? Where? she demanded frantically of herself. Donââ¬â¢t think about it now. Put the key back. Or do you want her to wake up while youââ¬â¢re standing here holding it? The journey back to Dianaââ¬â¢s nightstand seemed to take forever, and her stomach ached as if someone were grinding a boot there. The key clinked as she replaced it on the nightstand and the chain stuck to her sweaty hand. But Dianaââ¬â¢s breathing remained soft and even. Now get out, she ordered herself. She needed to be alone, to try and think. In her hurry to get away she forgot to be careful about placing her feet. A board creaked. Just keep going, never mind, she thought. Then she heard something that stopped her heart. A rustling from the bed. And then Dianaââ¬â¢s voice. ââ¬Å"Cassie?â⬠How to cite The Secret Circle: The Captive Chapter Three, Essay examples

Economics Supply And Demand Essay Example For Students
Economics Supply And Demand Essay Economics, supply and demand In the article we find that teenagers have the oppertunity to be demanding about their salary in the baby sitting field, because the amount of babysitters today are scarce. The babysitting population, teenagers, find themselves busy with school, part time jobs, and extracirricular activity. Teenagers with drivers licenses are even more scarce than those with out, all in all, Its hard to find a babysitter. Times have changed, just twenty years ago there were 33 million children who needed to be watched, and 39 million babysitters(age 10 19), recent polls suggest that children that need to be watched raised 18 percent to 39 million while baby sitters dropped 5 percent to 37 million. The rise in children coupled with American families spending more time out then years ago, has allowed the babysitters to set their price with out haggeling. Baby sitters are making well over the federal minimum wage of $5.15 an hour because they are in demand, and scarce; the babysitters who train in CPR, serve dinner, and drive are the hardest to come by and can demand the highest wages. In this article we see many examples of supply and damand and the powers of supply and demand. Babysitters are in demand, there is an increase in the amount of children who need to be watched yet there are relativly few who choose to babysit from the allready decreased amount of the babysitter work force. This gives the babysitter the advantage of a noncompetitive work force, allowing the baby sitter to set the price with out bargaining. If we were to compare two different production possibility frontiers, we would see a left shift of the curve while demand for baby sitters rises, from 1980 to 1996. In economics we concider this an inflation, the amount of resources(babysitters) decreased while the demand for them rose. This is what we would concider the begining of an econic problem because the resources are scarce. This resulted in an increase of price for that service. We also see that the most experienced, oldest, responcible, and best trained babysitters set the highest prices by up to 60% from a novice sallery of $4 to a expert sallery of $10 and consumers are willing to pay. A consumer is willing to pay that extra $6 an hour for the piece of mind they get when they go out and know that their children are being attending to in the best possible way, much like a consumer is willing to by name brand products for a higher price because they just feel like its better. In the next two or three years the work force of the babysitters will grow, and so will the number of people under the age of 10, this will show a steady PPC with no signs of relief for the consumer. This article shows the power of supply and demand. 20 years ago when children under the age of 10 and baby sitters age 10-19 were both fewer, we saw more competition between the baby sitters resulting in price decreases. Today with fewer baby sitters, all with busy scheduals, and more young children we see the damand increase resulting in an increase of price. Economics Essays .
